Both Feet on the Ground

Compass beside a trail representing guidance and personal discernment.

💗💗💗

One of the things I love most about spirituality is how exciting it can be.

When you're first discovering readings, signs, synchronicities, energy work, intuition, manifestation, or whatever path calls to you, it can feel like you've stumbled into an entirely new way of understanding yourself and the world around you.

Suddenly there seems to be meaning everywhere.

Patterns you never noticed before start standing out.

You begin connecting dots.

And sometimes those connections can be incredibly healing.

But I've also learned that this is where discernment becomes important.

Because not every message is for you.

Not every reading applies to your situation.

And not everything needs to have a deeper meaning attached to it.

Star-filled sky reflected in water representing wonder and discovery.

💗💗💗

In the beginning I fell into this trap myself.

There have been times when I did a reading for myself and thought:

"Okay, the cards said this was going to happen, so why hasn't it happened yet?"

I knew intellectually that the cards were a tool.

I knew they weren't meant to replace my intuition, my judgment, or my ability to make decisions.

And I knew that the future isn't necessarily written in stone. My choices (or lack thereof), and the choices of others, have an impact on the outcome.

But when you're tired, uncertain, or looking for reassurance, it's amazing how quickly the mind starts looking for certainty.

Sometimes that looked like watching whatever reading came across my feed.

"Oh, that's my sun sign."

"This pile must be for me."

And when you're already in a state where you want reassurance, it's even easier.

You hear something that sounds good.

You want it to be true.

So instead of asking whether it actually applies to your life, you start looking for ways to make it fit.

Maybe the reading says someone has feelings for you.

And suddenly you're thinking about that person you've never actually spoken to.

The one you occasionally see on social media.

The one who has never directly expressed interest.

Instead of looking at what's happening in reality, the mind starts building a story around what it hopes is true.

I've done versions of this myself.

Not because I lacked common sense, but because uncertainty is uncomfortable and certainty feels good.

And while there may have been guidance in those readings, there was also a tendency to want everything to fit.

To force connections that weren't necessarily there.

To make a message apply simply because it sounded good or because I wanted it to be true.

Board covered in connected notes representing attempts to find meaning in everything.

💗💗💗

For me, the difference between using a reading as a tool and using it as a crutch is pretty simple:

If things don't unfold exactly as the reading said, are you mad at the reader?

Because if the answer is yes, there's a good chance you've handed your agency to someone else.

That's one of the reasons I prefer the word guide.

My intention has never been to tell people what to do with their lives.

It's to offer information that might help bring something into awareness.

Maybe it confirms something you already know deep down.

Maybe it helps you notice a pattern in how you relate to others or how you think.

Maybe it gives you a perspective you hadn't considered.

And maybe none of it applies to you at all.

That's okay too.

The goal isn't to make every message fit.

The goal is to see whether it resonates and then use your own judgment.

💗💗💗

This is also one of the reasons I tend to focus my readings on you rather than on other people.

Not because readings about relationships or what someone thinks of you don't have value.

They do.

But I think they work best as gentle prompts rather than definitive answers.

Let's say you see a reading that says someone has feelings for you.

Okay.

Maybe they do.

But have you actually spoken to them?

Have they expressed those feelings? Have you?

Have their actions supported that idea?

Because at some point we have to engage with reality.

We have to communicate.

We have to ask questions.

We have to let people tell us who they are rather than relying entirely on a stranger on the internet to tell us what someone else is thinking.

The same goes for collective readings.

If a reading says you're going on a trip but you have absolutely no desire, intention, or means to travel, maybe that message wasn't for you.

Or maybe it wasn't meant literally.

Maybe it's symbolic.

Maybe it's aspirational.

Maybe it's not relevant at all.

And that's okay.

For example, if a reading says you're moving to Japan but you have no desire to move there, no plans to move there, and no realistic way of doing so, then that message probably isn't for you.

That doesn't make the reading wrong.

It might just mean you're not moving to Japan next Tuesday.

It just means not every message belongs to every person.

On the other hand, if moving abroad is something you've been actively considering, researching, and preparing for, then the reading may simply be reflecting a possibility that's already present in your life.

That's where discernment comes in.

Context matters.

Person looking at travel destinations while considering future possibilities.

💗💗💗

I've learned over the years that the mind loves certainty.

It loves explanations.

It loves feeling like everything happens for a reason and that every sign is pointing somewhere specific.

And while I do believe that everything happens for a reason, that reason may not be ready to become clear when we want it to.

Sometimes we can get so caught up looking for meaning that we stop paying attention to what's directly in front of us.

The bills still need to be paid.

Relationships still require communication.

Goals still require effort.

A vision board doesn't replace a budget.

A manifestation practice doesn't replace action.

I think this is where a lot of people get tripped up.

Spirituality isn't meant to replace the mundane.

It's meant to enhance it.

The two are meant to work together.

It's easy to hear that you're going to experience financial abundance and then sit around waiting for it to arrive.

If abundance readings automatically paid the bills, we'd all be retired by now.

It's much harder to create a budget, learn a new skill, apply for the job, build the business, or make the phone call.

But those tangible actions still matter.

For most of us, abundance doesn't appear out of thin air.

We still have to participate in our own lives.

And watching fifty readings about financial abundance isn't the same thing as creating a plan for your financial wellbeing.

Spiritual tools can absolutely support those things.

But they aren't substitutes for them.

Practical planning tools and spiritual tools displayed side by side.

💗💗💗

Ironically, some of the most meaningful readings I've received were the ones I initially dismissed.

At the time they didn't make sense.

I couldn't connect them to anything happening in my life.

Then days, weeks, months, or even years later, something would happen and I'd suddenly remember them.

And that's another reason discernment matters.

Not every message is meant for right now.

But that doesn't mean every message is meant for you either.

The trick is learning the difference and being okay with it not being for you right now—or at all.

There's a level of letting go and releasing attachment to an outcome.

Sometimes the knowledge is just meant to be stored away for later.

And other times it may not even be meant for you, but for someone close to you instead, and you're simply given the opportunity to relay the guidance or hold space for them.

And to be clear, this isn't me saying that readings aren't valuable.

Some of the readings that have meant the most to me were collective free readings that I was absolutely convinced weren't for me.

Not because they were inaccurate.

But because I was intimidated by what it would take to get there.

Sometimes a message points toward a version of ourselves we haven't grown into yet.

A possibility we aren't ready to believe.

A path that feels far bigger than our current circumstances.

Then life happens.

We take the steps.

We do the work.

We grow.

And one day we look around and realize we're standing in the very place we once thought couldn't possibly be ours.

Those moments are bittersweet in the best way.

Because they remind me that spirituality really is a gift.

Not because it removes the work.

Not because it guarantees outcomes.

But because sometimes it plants a seed of courage long before we're ready to act on it.

A seed that quietly grows while we're busy living our lives.

Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful for some of the messages that encouraged me to take the first step.

Even when I couldn't yet see where the path was leading.

That's another reason patience matters.

Not everything unfolds on the timeline we want.

Sometimes the lesson isn't that the message was wrong.

It's that we underestimated how much growth was still possible.

Person reflecting on reaching a place they once thought was beyond their abilities.

💗💗💗

So what helped me when I was heading toward over-reliance on readings was learning how to stay grounded.

For me, staying grounded looks like living my life.

It looks like spending time with people I trust.

It looks like physical movement.

It looks like taking care of responsibilities.

It looks like questioning my assumptions.

It looks like talking things through with trusted people instead of relying exclusively on spiritual content.

It looks like allowing space for intuition while also making room for logic, reason, and common sense.

And maybe most importantly, it looks like remembering that spiritual tools are meant to bring me back to myself.

Not away from myself.

Stay curious.

Stay open.

Allow yourself to be surprised.

But keep both feet on the ground.

Because the most powerful spiritual practice I've found isn't escaping reality.

It's learning how to engage with it more fully.

Footprints on a forest path symbolizing staying grounded while moving forward.

Author's Note

If you've ever watched a reading and thought, "This has to be for me," you're not alone.

I've been there too.

The goal isn't to stop seeking guidance.

It's to learn how to receive it without losing yourself in the process.
